UK Driving Test Waiting Times in 2026: What to Expect

UK driving test centre

Waiting times for UK practical driving tests remain well above pre-pandemic levels in 2026. For many learner drivers, securing a test date is still one of the most frustrating parts of getting a driving licence. This article breaks down what the current situation looks like and what you can realistically do about it.

How long are waits in 2026?

Across the UK, standard waiting times in 2026 range from 6 to 18 weeks for the next available slot. In high-demand urban centres, particularly in London, Birmingham, and Manchester, some candidates report waits of over 20 weeks through standard booking alone.

That said, the picture is more nuanced than the headline figure suggests. Cancellations create new slots every day, and strategic centre selection can cut waiting times significantly.

Where are waits longest?

Based on our monitoring in mid-2026, the highest-demand areas include:

  • London — most inner-London centres have waits of 14–20+ weeks
  • Birmingham city centre — 12–16 weeks
  • Manchester city centre — 10–15 weeks
  • Leeds city centre — 10–14 weeks
  • Bristol (central) — 10–13 weeks

Where can you find shorter waits?

The key insight most learner drivers miss is that test centres on the outskirts of cities, or in smaller towns within reasonable driving distance, consistently have much shorter waits:

  • Suburban centres 10–15 miles from a city centre often have 4–8 week waits
  • Small town centres in counties like Staffordshire, Shropshire, and North Yorkshire often have slots within 2–4 weeks
  • Driving to a centre further away for the test — using your instructor's car — is entirely legal and often worth it

The cancellation slot opportunity

This is the most reliable route to a fast test date. Every day, UK test centres receive cancellations — candidates who can no longer make their slot, tests postponed by examiners, and administrative changes. These slots become available with very short notice, sometimes the same day.

The challenge: cancellation slots are taken within minutes. Manual monitoring by refreshing a booking portal is ineffective. Automated monitoring — the approach we use for our clients — is far more reliable. 87% of our clients who opted for Priority assistance had a confirmed date within 5 working days.

What you can do today

  1. Book a standard slot now even if it's far away — you can always reschedule
  2. Try multiple nearby centres to find the earliest available
  3. Consider travelling further for the test itself
  4. Use an assistance service to monitor cancellations
