What Documents Do You Need on Your Driving Test Day?

Arriving at a UK driving test centre without the correct documents means your test is cancelled on the spot — and you lose your test fee. This happens more often than you might think. Here is exactly what you need to bring.

The essential documents (mandatory)

1. Your photocard provisional driving licence

This is non-negotiable. You must bring the photocard version of your provisional licence — the paper counterpart is no longer accepted as identification on its own.

Check before you go:

• Is the photo still current? If your appearance has changed significantly, update your licence
• Has the expiry date passed? Photocard licences expire after 10 years (or at age 70)
• Is your address correct? It should match your current home address

2. Your theory test pass certificate (if applicable)

If you passed your theory test before January 2014, you will have received a paper certificate. Bring it. If you passed after January 2014, your result is recorded electronically and the examiner can verify it — but having your certificate reference number with you is still advisable.

Critical: Your theory test pass is valid for only 2 years. If it has expired, your practical test cannot go ahead. You will need to resit the theory test and start the practical booking process again.

3. Your test booking confirmation

You will have received a confirmation email when you booked. Bring a printed copy or have it accessible on your phone. It contains your booking reference number, test centre address, and start time.

What you do NOT need to bring

• Passport (not required for the practical test)
• Birth certificate
• Insurance documents (the car must be insured, but you do not need to show a policy document)
• The paper counterpart to your licence (abolished in 2015)

The car you arrive in

Whether you arrive in your instructor's car or your own, the vehicle must be:

• Roadworthy — the examiner may refuse to proceed if the car is not in safe condition
• Insured for you to drive under instruction or for the test
• Fitted with a rear-view mirror for the examiner
• Free of any warning lights on the dashboard
